History & Historical Heritage
Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple, commonly known as the Waterfall Hill Temple, is a majestic Hindu temple complex located in Penang, Malaysia. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, it is one of the largest Murugan temples outside India. Originally established in the early 19th century near a waterfall inside the Penang Botanic Gardens, the temple was later relocated to a hilltop to facilitate expansion. Completed in 2012, the new main shrine is modeled after the Dravidian architecture of South India. Devotees must climb 511 steps to reach the hilltop shrine, which is higher than the steps of Batu Caves. The temple features a towering 7-tier Rajagopuram at its entrance and provides a panoramic view of Georgetown and the Malacca Strait.

Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)
"Originally, early Hindu settlers worshipped a sacred spear (Vel) at the base of the waterfall in the forest. According to local lore, Lord Murugan appeared before a devotee near the waterfall, blessing the spot. The waterfall's holy water was used for abhishekam rituals. When the British administration restricted access to the waterfall reservoir area, the temple was moved to the hilltop, which is symbolically revered as the Penang hill abode of Murugan, matching Palani Hills in Tamil Nadu."
