History & Historical Heritage
The Thiruarimeya Vinnagaram is one of the highly revered 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his consort Goddess Lakshmi, situated in the historic town of Thalaichangadu, Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. The temple's sacred heritage is immortalized in the hymns of the Alvars, the Vaishnavite poet-saints, whose Naalayira Divya Prabandham glorifies this shrine. The deities are worshipped as Amrudhagadavalli and Kudamudakoothan Perumal. According to historical notes, The Hindu god Shiva is believed to have started dancing ( tandava ) in fury at this place after the death of his consort Sati during the yagna (sacrifice) of Daksha . Each time his lock of hair touched the ground, there were eleven other forms of Shiva who appeared. The celestial deities were worried that if the dance continues, it would result in the decimation of all of creation. They prayed to Vishnu for help, who appeared at this place. On seeing Vishnu, Shiva's anger reduced, and he requested Vishnu to appear in eleven forms like he had. On his request, Vishnu appeared in eleven different forms at Tirunangur. The eleven places where Vishnu appeared are believed to be where the eleven temples in Tirunangur are located. [ 59 ] The architecture of the temple represents classical South Indian Dravidian stone carving, with high perimeter walls, tall gateway towers (Gopurams), and central shrines displaying intricate sculptures of Vishnu in various postures. Devotees from all over India travel to this holy destination to perform parikramas, join major festivals, and experience deep spiritual peace.
