Thirukudanthai (Kumbakonam)

The Thirukudanthai is one of the highly revered 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his consort Goddess Lakshmi, situated in the historic town of Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. The temple's sacred heritage is immortalized in the hymns of the Alvars, the Vaishnavite poet-saints, whose Naalayira Divya Prabandham glorifies this shrine. The deities are worshipped as Komalavalli and Aravamuda Perumal. According to historical notes, The temple is called Ubaya Pradhana Kshetram as the mulavar (presiding deity) and utsavar (festive deity) enjoy the same importance. It is believed that the presiding deity asked Nathamuni to compile the four thousand verses of Naalayira Divya Prabandham at this place. [ 37 ] The twin temple chariots weigh 300 t (660,000 lb) each and are next only in size to the ones in Thyagaraja temple in Thiruvarur and Andal Temple in Srivilliputhur . [ 38 ] This temple is along Kaveri and is one of the Pancharanga Kshetrams . [ 39 ] The architecture of the temple represents classical South Indian Dravidian stone carving, with high perimeter walls, tall gateway towers (Gopurams), and central shrines displaying intricate sculptures of Vishnu in various postures. Devotees from all over India travel to this holy destination to perform parikramas, join major festivals, and experience deep spiritual peace.
