Thiruthani Murugan Temple

Thiruthani, Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu 631209

History & Historical Heritage

Subramanya Swamy Temple in Thiruthani, Thiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, is the fifth of the Arupadai Veedu, located on a hill called Tanigaimalai. Devotees climb 365 steps representing the days of the year to reach the temple at the summit. Thiruthani is the place where Lord Murugan found peace and tranquility after his fierce battle with Surapadman. It is here that he married Valli, a local tribal maiden, and settled down. Because Murugan shed his anger here, the temple is associated with 'Thanigai' (peace or calming down). The main deity holds a spear (Vel) but is depicted in a peaceful, benevolent form. The temple holds historical and spiritual significance, with references dating back to the Sangam era, and has been patronized by various Pallava, Chola, and Vijayanagara rulers. The temple is famous for the Aadi Krithigai festival, where hundreds of thousands of devotees carry flower-adorned Kavadis and offer prayers, and the New Year step festival where hymns are sung on each of the 365 steps.
