The Thirukoodalur is one of the highly revered 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his consort Goddess Lakshmi, situated in the historic town of Kapisthalam, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. The temple's sacred heritage is immortalized in the hymns of the Alvars, the Vaishnavite poet-saints, whose Naalayira Divya Prabandham glorifies this shrine. The deities are worshipped as Padmasani and Jagathrakshaga Perumal. According to historical notes, The river goddess Kaveri wanted to cleanse herself, and approached the Hindu god Brahma , who advised her to worship Vishnu. She is believed to have worshipped Vishnu at this place, and received relief. A parrot that was devoted to Vishnu was shot down in the nearby forest. Vishnu rescued the parrot and apprised him of his previous birth. Thus, it is believed that Vishnu descends here for all forms of life. Vishnu is also believed to have appeared for sage Nandaka. [ 30 ] The architecture of the temple represents classical South Indian Dravidian stone carving, with high perimeter walls, tall gateway towers (Gopurams), and central shrines displaying intricate sculptures of Vishnu in various postures. Devotees from all over India travel to this holy destination to perform parikramas, join major festivals, and experience deep spiritual peace.
