Swaminatha Swamy Temple at Swamimalai, located near Kumbakonam on the banks of a tributary of the Cauvery River, is the fourth of the Arupadai Veedu. The temple is unique as it is built on an artificial hillock, requiring devotees to climb 60 stone steps representing the 60 years of the Tamil calendar cycle. Swamimalai holds immense theological significance as it is the place where Lord Murugan became the teacher (Guru) to his father, Lord Shiva. According to scriptural lore, when Shiva asked Murugan for the meaning of the sacred Pranava Mantra 'Om', Murugan explained its profound mystical significance in detail, earning him the title 'Swaminathan' (The Lord of Shiva). The shrine of Swaminatha Swamy is located at the top of the hillock, while the shrines of Shiva (Sundareswarar) and Parvati (Meenakshi) are situated at the base. The temple is also renowned for its traditional bronze icon casting industry, which has survived since the Chola era. Devotees visit Swamimalai to pray for wisdom, intelligence, and success in educational pursuits.
