History & Historical Heritage
The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu, is the first and most prominent of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Spanning over 156 acres (63 hectares) with a perimeter of 4 kilometers, it is the largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world. The temple is located on an island formed by the twin rivers Cauvery and Kollidam, creating a serene, natural spiritual environment. Dedicated to Ranganatha, a reclining form of Vishnu on the seven-headed serpent Adisesha, the temple is often called 'Bhuloka Vaikuntam' (Heaven on Earth). The temple complex features 21 majestic Gopurams (gateway towers), including the imposing Rajagopuram, which stands at 239.5 feet (73 meters) high, making it one of the tallest in Asia. The temple has 7 concentric enclosures (Prakarams) representing the seven chakras. Its history spans thousands of years, with major contributions and architectural additions from the Chola, Pandya, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara dynasties. The temple's halls, such as the Hall of 1000 Pillars, are decorated with elaborate carvings of warriors on rearing horses. Srirangam is also the spiritual center of the Sri Vaishnavism philosophy, closely associated with the great saint Ramanuja, whose physical body is preserved in a shrine within the temple. The annual Vaikunta Ekadasi festival is the most celebrated event, drawing hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to pass through the Paramapada Vasal (the gate to heaven).

Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)
"The deity of Sri Ranganatha was worshipped by Rama and given to Vibhishana of Lanka as a gift. While returning, Vibhishana placed the idol on the banks of the Kaveri to perform rituals. The Lord refused to move but promised to face south towards Lanka to bless Vibhishana."
