Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)
"According to the Shiva Purana, Soma (the Moon God) was married to the 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati. However, he favored Rohini, neglecting the others. An enraged Daksha cursed Soma to lose his light and fade away. Soma did intense penance here to Lord Shiva. Pleased by his devotion, Shiva partially relieved the curse, allowing Soma to wax and wane. Shiva then manifested here as Somnath, the Lord of the Moon, representing renewal and eternal light."
