Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)
"After defeating Ravana in Lanka, Lord Rama returned to India. To absolve the sin of killing a Brahmin (Ravana), Rama decided to worship Shiva. He sent Hanuman to bring a lingam from Kailash. Since Hanuman was delayed, Rama's consort Sita sculpted a lingam out of sand (Ramalingam). Hanuman later returned with a lingam (Vishwalingam), which Rama also installed."
