History & Historical Heritage

The Jagannath Temple in Puri is a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Sri Krishna, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra. Built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, it is famous for its annual Ratha Yatra (Chariot Festival). The temple is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites. The main temple is constructed in Kalinga architectural style, rising to a height of 65 meters. It is known for its mystical facts, such as the flag waving against the wind direction, and no birds flying above the dome. The kitchen is one of the largest in India, preparing prasadam (Mahaprasad) for thousands of devotees daily using traditional clay pots stacked on wood fires.

Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)

"According to legend, the original image of the deity was found near a banyan tree in the form of Indranila Mani or the Blue Jewel. Viswavasu, a tribal king, worshipped the deity in secret. King Indradyumna of Avanti wanted to find this mysterious deity, but it vanished. Later, the deity instructed the king in a dream to construct a temple and carve the idols out of a sacred log (Daru) found floating on the Puri beach. The divine architect Vishwakarma carved the wooden images in secret under the condition of complete silence, but the impatient king opened the doors early, leaving the wooden idols with incomplete hands and legs, which are still worshipped today."
