Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple

West Fort, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala 695023

History & Historical Heritage

The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a historic temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the 'Anantha Shayana' posture (reclining on the serpent Adisesha). Built in a unique blend of Kerala and Dravidian architectural styles, it features a majestic 100-foot tall, 7-tiered Rajagopuram. The temple's history is deeply intertwined with the royal family of Travancore. In 1750, Maharaja Marthanda Varma dedicated the entire kingdom to the deity, declaring the royal family as 'Padmanabha Dasa' (servants of the Lord), ruling the state on his behalf. The main deity is made of 12,008 sacred Saligrams transported from the Gandaki River in Nepal, visible through three separate doors representing the creation, preservation, and dissolution phases. The temple achieved international prominence in 2011 when a Supreme Court inventory revealed subterranean vaults containing gold, diamonds, and precious artifacts valued at billions of dollars, making it the wealthiest institution in recorded history. The temple enforces a strict dress code (dhoti for men, sarees/mundu for women) to maintain its traditional sanctity. The bi-annual Alpashy and Panguni festivals, culminating in the holy Aarathu bath procession in the Arabian Sea, are major cultural spectacles.

Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)

"The sage Divakara Muni was blessed with the vision of Lord Vishnu in the form of a mischievous child. The child once swallowed the sage's Shaligram stone. Enraged, the sage chased the child, who ran and disappeared inside a hollow tree. The tree fell and transformed into the cosmic form of Lord Vishnu resting on Anantha (the serpent) in a colossal size."
