History & Historical Heritage
Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is one of the most significant Hindu temples in Jaffna, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. Dedicated to Lord Murugan (Kandaswamy), it is renowned for its architectural beauty and grand annual festivals. The temple was originally established in the 10th century AD by Puvaneka Vahu, a minister of the Jaffna Kingdom, and was subsequently rebuilt several times due to foreign destruction. The current structure, which features towering golden Gopurams, high perimeter walls, and traditional Dravidian stone architecture, was initiated in 1734 AD. The annual festival (Thiruvila), spanning 25 days, draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from Sri Lanka and the global Tamil diaspora.
