History & Historical Heritage
Nainativu Nagapooshani Amman Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati (worshipped as Nagapooshani Amman). It is located on the island of Nainativu, off the coast of Jaffna Peninsula, Sri Lanka. The temple is historically revered as one of the 64 Shakti Peethas (specifically the Shakthi Peetha where Sati's anklets are believed to have fallen). The temple is mentioned in ancient literature and has long served as a pilgrimage site for childless couples seeking offspring. The current structure, displaying magnificent South Indian architectural details with painted Gopurams, was rebuilt in the 18th century after being destroyed by Portuguese colonial forces.

Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)
"Legend has it that Indra, the king of gods, committed a sin and was cursed. Lord Shiva advised him to visit Nainativu and worship the divine Mother to seek forgiveness. Indra built a temple here. Another legend speaks of a snake (Naga) that swam across the ocean carrying a lotus flower in its mouth to worship the Goddess. A giant eagle (Garuda) tried to attack the snake, but through the Goddess's grace, the snake was protected, and Indra established the shrine here."
