Muktinath Temple

Mustang Valley, Muktinath, Nepal 33100

History & Historical Heritage

The Muktinath Temple, located in the Mustang district of Nepal at an altitude of 3,710 meters (12,172 feet) in the Thorong La mountain pass, is the only Divya Desam situated outside of India. Revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, it is known as 'Mukti Kshetra' (the place of liberation or salvation). For Hindus, it is one of the eight Swayam Vyakta Kshetras of Vishnu. The main deity is a gold-cast life-sized statue of Vishnu as Muktinath, surrounded by shrines of Shiva, Brahma, and Ganesha. The temple complex features 108 brass water sprouts shaped like bull heads, arranged in a semi-circle, discharging freezing cold water sourced from the Gandaki River. Pilgrims perform a ritual bath under all 108 spouts to wash away past karma. Nearby, the Jwala Mai temple houses an eternal natural gas flame burning on top of water, symbolizing the union of five elements. For Buddhists, the site is associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, who meditated here on his journey to Tibet. The surrounding Gandaki River basin is the sole source of Shaligram stones—fossilized ammonite shells worshipped as symbols of Vishnu. Accessible via an adventure trek or a jeep ride through the rugged Annapurna mountain range, Muktinath stands as a symbol of religious harmony and transcendental peace.

Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)

"This sacred site represents the place where Lord Vishnu took the form of Shaligram (sacred ammonite fossils found in Gandaki river) due to a curse. It is one of the ancient places where the elements of nature (earth, water, fire, air, and ether) meet, and is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists for offering Mukti (salvation)."
