History & Historical Heritage
The Shri Ambabai/Mahalakshmi Temple of Kolhapur, Maharashtra, is one of the highly revered Astadasa Shakti Peethas where Goddess Sati's eyes (or left hand, according to some lists) fell. Built in the 7th century by the Chalukya Empire, it features a star-shaped black stone architecture with intricate carvings. The deity of Mahalakshmi is carved out of black gemstone, weighing about 40 kg, holding a shield, mace, and a citrus fruit. Uniquely, twice a year, the rays of the setting sun fall directly on the feet and chest of the goddess through the west-facing entrance, an astronomical design marvel (Kiranotsav).

Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)
"Kolhapur is referred to as Karvir Kshetra, a sacred land created by Lord Vishnu. Goddess Lakshmi chose this spot to reside after having a dispute with Lord Vishnu. Sati's eyes fell here, sanctifying it as a center of power where the goddess fulfills all wishes."
