Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)
"Ujjain was ruled by a pious Shiva devotee named King Chandrasena. When the demon Dushana attacked the city and tortured its inhabitants, the devotees prayed to Shiva. The Lord manifested from the ground as Mahakala, destroyed the demon, and at the request of the citizens, established himself here as the self-manifested (Swayambhu) south-facing deity to protect the city."
