Konark Sun Temple

Konark, Puri, Odisha 752111

History & Historical Heritage

The Sun Temple at Konark, located on the coastline of Odisha, is a monumental 13th-century temple dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. Built by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty around 1250 AD, it is shaped like a colossal chariot carrying the Sun God across the heavens. The chariot features 24 elaborately carved stone wheels, each about 10 feet in diameter, pulled by a team of seven horses. The wheels are not only decorative but also function as sundials, capable of calculating time down to the minute. Known as the 'Black Pagoda' by European sailors due to its dark stone silhouette that contrasted with the white Jagannath Temple in Puri, the Konark Sun Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though the massive main sanctuary (Deul) collapsed over the centuries, the surviving audience hall (Jagamohana) stands as a testament to the heights of Kalinga architecture. The temple walls are covered with exquisite reliefs depicting daily life, dancers, musicians, animals, and erotic sculptures. Built using iron beams and chlorite, laterite, and khondalite stones, the construction showcases exceptional structural engineering. The temple's alignment is such that the first rays of the rising sun strike the main entrance. Today, even in its semi-ruined state, Konark remains a breathtaking testament to India's artistic legacy and scientific prowess in astronomy.

"According to legend, Samba, the son of Lord Krishna, was cursed with leprosy. He did intense penance for 12 years to the Sun God (Surya) near the Chandrabhaga River. Pleased with his devotion, Surya cured him. In gratitude, Samba built a grand temple to the Sun God at this spot."
