Located in the Garhwal Himalayan range near the Mandakini River in Uttarakhand, Kedarnath Temple is one of the most revered and remote pilgrimage sites in India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is the highest of the twelve Jyotirlingas and forms a vital part of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. According to Hindu mythology, the temple was originally built by the Pandavas as a penance to please Lord Shiva, who had taken the form of a bull to elude them. The hump of the bull is worshipped as the lingam in the inner sanctum. The current temple structure is believed to have been revived by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD. Built of massive grey stone slabs interlocked with iron clamps, the temple has survived extreme weather conditions, avalanches, and the devastating 2013 floods, which destroyed much of the surrounding town but left the temple virtually unscathed—a miracle attributed to a massive boulder (Bheem Shila) that rolled down and blocked the debris from hitting the structure. Due to extreme alpine winter conditions, the temple is only accessible to the public from April/May (Akshaya Tritiya) to November (Kartik Purnima), after which the deity is moved down to Ukhimath for winter worship. The journey to Kedarnath involves an arduous 16-kilometer trek from Gaurikund, symbolizing the spiritual test and deep devotion of the pilgrims.

Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)
"After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Shiva to absolve their sins of killing kin. Shiva eluded them and took the form of a bull at Kedarnath. When Bhima spotted him and tried to catch him, Shiva sank into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. Pleased by their determination, Shiva forgave them and manifested here as Kedarnath."
