History & Historical Heritage
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the ancient city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Situated on the western bank of the holy river Ganga, it is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest of Shiva temples. Varanasi is considered the oldest living city in the world, and Kashi Vishwanath has been its spiritual heart for millennia. The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times throughout history; the current structure was constructed by the Maratha ruler Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1780. In 1839, Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab donated gold to cover the temple's domes, giving it the famous name 'Golden Temple'. The main deity is a black stone lingam housed in a silver altar. Millions of pilgrims visit every year to perform rituals and seek liberation (Moksha) by bathing in the Ganges and offering prayers at the temple. The recently inaugurated Kashi Vishwanath Corridor has transformed the temple complex, connecting the main shrine directly to the ghats of the Ganges River, easing congestion and enhancing the pilgrimage experience. The temple represents the resilience of Hindu culture, standing as a beacon of spirituality and ancient traditions for devotees worldwide.

Sacred Legend (Sthala Puranam)
"Lord Shiva manifested here as a towering pillar of light (Jyotirlinga) to settle a dispute of supremacy between Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva declared Varanasi as his eternal home, which sits on the tip of his Trishul. It is believed that Kashi Vishwanath offers Moksha (liberation) to those who breathe their last in this holy city."
