Jwalamukhi Temple (Kangra)
Jwalamukhi Town, Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh 176031
History & Historical Heritage
The Jwalamukhi Temple is located in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh. It is the fifteenth Astadasa Shakti Peeth where Goddess Sati's tongue fell. The temple is unique as it contains no traditional stone idol or image; instead, natural gas flames emerging from fissures in the rock are worshipped as the physical manifestations of the goddess (Jwala). The temple dome is covered in gold, which was gifted by the Mughal Emperor Akbar after he tried to extinguish the flames with water and failed, leading to his devotion.
