Chamundeshwari Temple (Mysore)
Chamundi Hill, Mysuru, Karnataka 570010
History & Historical Heritage
Perched atop the Chamundi Hills in Mysore, Karnataka, the Chamundeshwari Temple is a major Astadasa Shakti Peeth where Goddess Sati's hair fell. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari (a fierce manifestation of Durga), who defeated the demon king Mahishasura on these hills, giving Mysore its name (Mahishuru). The temple has a magnificent 7-tier Dravidian Gopuram built by the Hoysala rulers in the 12th century and later expanded by the Vijayanagara and Wodeyar kings. Halfway up the hill is a massive 16-foot monolithic statue of Nandi, carved out of a single granite boulder.
