"Demon King Ravana worshipped Shiva to obtain the Atmalingam and take it to Lanka. Shiva gave it on the condition that he should not place it on the ground, otherwise it would establish itself there. En route, Ravana handed it to a cowherd (Lord Ganesha in disguise) to answer nature's call. Ganesha placed it on the ground here, establishing it forever."
