Badrinath Temple

Badrinath, Chamoli, Uttarakhand 246422

History & Historical Heritage

The Badrinath Temple, located in the town of Badrinath in Uttarakhand, is a highly revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Situated along the banks of the Alaknanda River in the Garhwal Himalayan range, it is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites and a vital Divya Desam. The temple is located at an altitude of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) above sea level, nestled between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges. The main deity is a 1-meter tall black stone idol of Vishnu in the form of Badrinarayan, depicted in a meditative posture (Padmasana), which is considered self-manifested (Swayam Vyakta). According to legend, Lord Vishnu sat in meditation here, and his consort Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri (jujube) tree to protect him from the harsh Himalayan weather. The current temple has a colorful facade resembling a Buddhist monastery, reflecting historical regional influences, and is believed to have been established by the philosopher Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Due to extreme sub-zero winter weather, the temple is only open for six months, from April/May to November. Devotees first bathe in the Tapt Kund, a natural thermal hot spring located just below the temple before entering the shrine. The journey through the rugged Himalayan terrain to reach Badrinath is a powerful pilgrimage of devotion and spiritual introspection.
